CHAPTER EIGHT

THE SOLDIER NUDGED her ribs with the point of a rifle and pushed her, stumbling, into the bleak cell at the back of the security office.

“Move.”

Bree looked around. It must once have been some sort of treatment room. The worn grey-green linoleum flooring that banked up the bottom 30cm of the walls was original. The metal slatted bench, bolted to the wall looked newer, if only slightly. Old, fluorescent strip lights flickered above her head. High on the wall there were narrow, barred windows and in front of her a sturdy wooden door. The future didn’t seem to have arrived in this room.

“You can’t put me in here,” she told the soldier. “I have to go back. My son…”

“You should have thought of your son before you began smuggling narcotics.”

“Leave her.” The deep, familiar voice interrupted the soldier.

“Adam, it’s me. Mom.” Bree stumbled as she lurched towards him and he took a step away arching his body to avoid even a brush against her.

“I buried my mother years ago. Whoever you are, whoever you were, you are not my mother.” Bree caught her breath. She’d died?

“Dead? You thought I was dead?”

“If you were my mother, you’d remember how you threw our future away on this shit.” He held the parcel of drugs in his hands.

“I don’t take drugs.” Nausea and dizziness were almost constant now. The strain of standing was becoming too much. Bree stepped back to the bench.

“Oh come on. If you’d ever met my mother you’d know she was incapable of not sampling the merchandise.” Bree sat. She could feel the cold, metal bars dig into the cramping flesh of her thighs, but at least she was sitting. She watched her son drag his fingers through his cut-too-short hair and begin pacing across the room. For a moment she just watched him. He’d grown so big, so tall, so healthy. So…alive. It was hard to even picture the pale, barely conscious boy she’d left in the casualty room. She glanced at his left hand. It was still there, the tiny, now-faded, scar across the top of his hand where a rusty nail had skinned him as a toddler. She smiled. Then she tuned into what he was saying.

“You’d better explain who the hell you are,” Adam said. “And who you are the courier for.” She felt the room dip and sway and tried to focus. How could he not know she was his Mom?

“I’m not sure if you will believe me,” Bree said as she began to explain her experiences of the last few days.

During the course of her story Adam had sunk down onto the bench next to her. Now he sat with his head cradled in his hands. She longed to see if his hair was as soft as the boy she’d left.

“Son?” Bree reached out a tentative hand and softly rested it on his shoulder. He didn’t pull away.

“It doesn’t sound as far-fetched as you think.”

“You believe me?” Bree felt a little disbelief of her own.
